The Central West Auckland Maths Challenge for Māori and Pasifika juniors kicked off again in 2025, with Rutherford College continuing its proud role as a key participant and host. This Mathex-style competition blends fast-paced Maths problem-solving with teamwork and athleticism, giving our students a unique opportunity to grow and showcase their talent.
The third round of the challenge took place on June 10th, hosted by Rutherford College. Rutherford, alongside St Peter’s and Waitākere College, competed across a field of seven teams. Representing Rutherford in the Year 10 division, the team consisting of Asha Turoa, Ruby Carter, Paul Amerika, and Reuben Cooper claimed 1st place, winning a $30 Westfield voucher each. The second Year 10 team of Isha Baynosa, Miri Hatalafale, Kiara Gill, and Karina Reddy were unable to place but we are hopeful for next time.
During the Year 9 division of the third round, the Year 9 teams also delivered outstanding performance. Team A (Sharlott Naicker, Jayden-Lee Hita, and Kaia Cash) took 1st place, while Team B (Ben Curtis, Riley Grace, and Khaedon Nootai), secured 3rd, earning $30 and $10 vouchers respectively.
Rutherford is hosting the next round early in Term 3, with the final showdown against schools from all over Auckland at De La Salle. That event is expected to see up to 30 teams competing for major prizes, a fitting end to a challenge that celebrates not just mathematics, but the strength, talent, and promise of Māori and Pasifika students.
