This whakataukī relates to Rūaumoko, the atua Māori of volcanoes, earthquakes, and the changing seasons. It encourages students to make an impactful change. 

Rūaumoko is reflected in this saying through his ability to move and reshape Papatūānuku. Through earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, he leaves visible marks upon the land of his mother. Papatūānuku, in the same way, students are encouraged to stand with purpose, make their presence known, and leave their own mark on their kura, community, and future.

This tells the story of Tāne Mahuta (Tāwhaki in other iwi) and his pursuit for the baskets of knowledge. He was advised to climb the main vine to the highest heavens because the loose, swaying vines would lead him astray and cause him to fall. 

This story encourages students to be strong, resilient and to pursue high knowledge like Tāne. 

This whakataukī reflects the arrival of Tamanuiterā and the transition from darkness into light. It speaks to new beginnings, hope, and the opportunity to move forward with clarity and purpose.
