NZCBA 2024 National Festival

NZCBA 2024 National Festival

It has been an amazing musical weekend for many of the Rutherford College Whanau and Rangatahi!

The New Zealand Concert Band Association (NZCBA) held its national festival in Hamilton over the weekend of 2-4 August. Concert Bands from all across New Zealand performed at The Gallagher Performing Arts Centre, Waikato University. This is an annual event which provides performance opportunities for concert bands, ensembles and soloists, along with workshops/clinics to educate, stimulate and upskill band musicians and conductors.

The event is a festival rather than a competition. Bands, ensembles, and soloists are adjudicated and given constructive feedback on their performances. At the end of the weekend, they are awarded gold, silver, or bronze plaques or certificates based on the report rubric NZCBA provides the adjudicators, where the focus is on making beautiful music whatever the grade of the repertoire, rather than degree of difficulty.

The following Rutherford College students were part of the West City Youth Concert Band who were awarded a Gold award for their performance: Charlotte Apps, Jimmy Egginton, Daniel Faavae, David Kang, Parker Robb, Nico Curran, Riley Ankcorn, Aiden Maslen, Ben McIntyre, Harry Donald, Matthew Delport, Finn Boyack, Max RobbMarkham, Autumn Bell, Elan Van Dolleweerd, Isla Bowen, Nova Maslen, Edward Rothwell-Horner, and Sophie Yorke (as well as ex-Rutherford students Theo Robb Markham, Luca Boyack and Ezra Lamdin).

Charlotte Marriott, Jin Na, as well as Miss Do Hee Kim and Mrs Antonina Marriott (along with many ex-Rutherford students Sang Hyun Kim, Luca Boyack, Aiden Whyte, James Marriott, Ben Marriott) were performers of the West City Concert Band. The West City Concert Band were awarded a Gold award for their performance, an adjudicator's commendation, The Style award for the most engaging soloist in a piece, The Robert Lutt Trophy for most Outstanding Performance of a Select Piece (for Rivers of Air), and The Royal NZ Navy Band Trophy for the most Outstanding overall performance from a band!

Congratulations to all students and whanau involved in both concert bands!
