Readers Cup

Readers Cup

On Wednesday the 19th of April five year nine students went to Westgate Library to represent Rutherford College. The event? The Reader’s cup, a competition where year nine students from across auckland compete to show who has the best readers. The venue was kindly provided by Auckland libraries. The food, provided by Massey High School, was great. We had a team of five people: Rosa Curtis, Harry Donald, Suleman Hamdani, Indy Kuka and Adam Yuan, not to mention our staff coaches Catherine Anthony and Deborah Davies. Our competition came from many schools around Auckland and was very varied. We had half an hour after we arrived for strategy talks, then the competition started.

The competition was divided into six rounds, one for each book. Students had to answer questions about the books. Reserves could be switched out every two rounds as only four people were allowed to participate from each team at a time. The first round went pretty well and so did the second. The third and the fourth seemed to go very well but the fifth and sixth ones we felt we did our best. After we were done, all we could do was wait on our results.

We sadly did not place in the top three, however we did place 7th across the board. Overall, the whole team agreed this was a good result. Everyone went home happy that night.
