International Languages and Cultural Week

International Languages and Cultural Week

The Week Where Diversity Takes The Limelight!!!

Last week was the International Language Week at Rutherford College it was a privilege for many diversities to be in the limelight, and celebrate them within the school. Many fun events took place during lunchtimes throughout the week. This allowed many students to get the opportunities to participate, and gain house points. A range of these games was beer mug racing, chopstick racing, squid game, and karaoke, and at the end of the week on Friday there was Rutherford’s traditional Food Fear Factor. The winner of the food fear factor was Jacob Wilson from 13GR. It was captivating to see the participants try all sorts of bizarre, crazy and peculiar foods that they wouldn’t eat daily. On Friday, the Prefects also performed together, a combination of representations from different cultures included in the performance, which was marvellous to watch.

The highlight of the week was the evening that occurred on Friday evening, with our school also hosting its very second language evening. Many cultural groups were performing from elegance to pop-styled performances. It was delightful to see the hard work and effort students and teachers put into creating exquisite masterpieces that would leave the audience in awe. It was remarkable to see various types of cuisines from different countries which were showcased on an excellent quality level.

One student who attended the evening said, “I found the event an overall success. I enjoyed seeing so many groups performing this year and seeing people in their cultural attire. I also enjoyed organising it with everyone.” Another one said, “It was enriching I would say, because it was my first time experiencing a cultural night. I got to learn about new cultural dances and got to try foods and desserts from various cultures. I think how the members of each group interacted with each other and the celebration of diversity left a lasting impact. I feel lucky to have experienced that.”

A parent who also attended the evening said, “I think it was great, it was good to see such amazing performances. The hosts did a beautiful job presenting the language evening, and the costumes were gorgeous. It was also great to see many people turning up for the evening, with the food also being delicious. Overall it was an awesome evening to attend and experience the night.”

Overall these fun, engaging activities that happened throughout the week, created a positive atmosphere throughout the school, as the incorporation of language and culture combined in the games would have helped the students to expand their views on other cultures and enjoy themselves at the same time. Getting an insight into the cultures would also allow students to be open to many new opportunities and build connections with everyone in the community.

Finally, a huge thanks to the number of students, the International Languages Department and other teachers who helped organise the International Language Week and the evening, enabling it to be a fantastic, memorable experience for everyone!!
