Tika Maori and Pasifika (TMAP) University of Auckland Day

Tika Maori and Pasifika (TMAP) University of Auckland Visit

Faakalofa lahi atu, on the Wednesday 26th of March, Mia Cox 13GN, John-Allan Lambert 13YK, Micah Nebete 13IN, Jake Richards 12FN, Lilli Hayes (from Massey High School) and myself as part of the Rutherford Tika Maori and Pasifika (TMAP) Internship embarked on an eventful trip, visiting the Engineering Department in Newmarket and the Central City campus. The tour included, The New Zealand Formula Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) workshop showcasing the different stages and experimental processes that went into the manufacturing of the Formula cars, A full guide of the machines used in the Geo-technical engineering department which is used test the durability of the foundations we use every day and, A look at the The Internet of Things (IoT) industry where they got to use hands on things like Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) headsets and even a 360 camera used in the construction industry. “I found that this trip had so much to offer and a real look at what I could be doing in the future. It was an exciting and educational experience that I enjoyed throughout the day.” - by Seth Hatalafale 12NN

“Going on this trip was an eye-opening experience, exposing me to sectors of engineering that I wasn’t really familiar with. It was interesting learning about the processes that go into creating things across a variety of engineering types and it was really cool to see in The New Zealand Formula SAE workshop, how engineering pairs up with a wide variety of sectors such as business. It was truly an amazing experience, giving me a deep insight into where I may go in the engineering industry.”

(My thing)

“Learning about the advanced design of pedestrian transport systems for a half hour, the utter competence and efficiency of the transport sector was unimaginable, we also got to see the University of Auckland's formula SAE cars and Mixed reality compared to structural assessment and drones, whilst learning about LIDAR and processes incorporating IOT to engineering. I also got to blast into multiple walls on a community formula 1 simulator” (I don’t think I hit anyone though).

“Learning about all the Cool things they do across the University of Auckland as well as learning a lot about the research they are doing about electricity charging cars across the road that's built into the asphalt/road. It taught me alot about all different aspects of Engineering I didn't really know about or heard of. It was a really interesting and cool experience for me.”

“The participation of these young keen individuals is what the TMAP organization is all about, giving  Maori and Pasifika Rutherford students a chance to look into what Engineering can offer. This program is a gateway to all aspects of engineering whether you're interested in aviation or like civil engineering, the opportunities provided are endless”. Mr Talamaivao - organiser.

Fa’afetai lava to Dr Michael O’Sullivan for organising the day with the SAE Team Nikesh Nama (Chief finance officer), Nicholas Hutt (Workshop Foreman), Vraj Sheth (Composites Manager) and Claudia Chan (Business Manager). Our second visit to The Transportation Research Centre - and Nikhil Narayan (Technician Services - Technician) and Associate Professor Dough Wilson (Director) and lastly our VR experience thanks to Na Zhou - Professional Teaching Fellow - Civil and Environmental Eng.

Fakaaue, Manuina e aho (Thank you and have a nice day in Niuean)
