Unitech Institute of Technology - MT Albert Campus Pasifika Day

Unitech Pasifika Day

On Tuesday 25th March , Vilfred Crawley 12YT, Luta Samasoni 13AH, Salolo Pese 12YT, Asiasiga Iakina 13TR, Aloima Taumataga 13TR, Erollis Soseu 13WO, Eseta Peniamina13PW and Kelavena Henry 13TR, and myself had the amazing opportunity to attend the Unitec, Mt Albert Campus for the Unitec Pasefika Day. A day to celebrate, learn and connect. It was a day filled with culture, inspiration and connection and it left a lasting impression on all of us.

One of the highlights was the incredible performances we witnessed. The Tuvaluan, Maneanea group graced the stage with their beautiful dances and songs, showcasing the richness of their culture. What stood out the most wasn't just the performances themselves, but the support and energy our group of students showed through input. We cheered loudly, embracing the Pasefika spirit of unity and pride.

Another memorable experience was the opening Kava ceremony. It was fascinating to learn about this traditional practice, often associated with Fijian, but we discover that kava ceremonies are shared across many Pasefika Islands. Embracing this part of Fijian culture felt meaning and it deepened our appreciation for the interconnectedness of our diverse backgrounds.

Also the talanoa sessions were both powerful and inspiring. Emmanuel Simon, shared his story of resilience, teaching us that failure is not the end but an opportunity to approach things from another angle. He spoke about not being accepted into Universities back in Papua New Guinea but finding another path to achieve his dream. Reminding us that perseverance is key. Irene Wu, a chinese born and raised in Tonga not only talked about the importance of being proud of your identity, but also shared a heartfelt story  about the volcanic eruption in Tonga back in 2020. Her story taught us to appreciate the little things, as they often become the most precious when times get tough. Their words resonated with most of us deeply, reminding us of the strength within our Pasifika communities.

There were also fun moments, like answering trivia questions and being rewarded with a $5 voucher, a small but exciting bonus. We also met various ex-Rutherfordian who did not excel academically in school but never gave up. Today they hold Management positions at Unitec, a testament to the fact that your past doesn't define your future. Linda Aumua attended Rutherford in the 70’s and is currently Head of School - Healthcare and Social Practice. Sailauama Cheryl Talamaivao also in the 70’s a Senior Lecturer - Social Practice, School of Healthcare and Social Practice. (yes Mr Talamaivao’s sister) Tu Nu’ualiitia attended in the 80’s (with Mr Talamaivao) is the Student Experience Partner, School of Trades and Services. Pa Tepairu Tere, the Student Central Advisor who also attended Rutherford College. Even though he didn’t attend Rutherford Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga, Executive Director and former National MP.

This trip wouldn’t have been possible without the guidance and support of Mr Talamaivao, who took the time to bring us along and we experienced such a meaningful day. On behalf of our group, fa’afetai tele lava for this unforgettable experience. We left Unitec not only feeling more connected to our cultures but also inspired to keep pushing towards our dreams, no matter the obstacles.
