Rutherford athletes compete at championships
The Auckland Secondary Schools Athletics Championships were held over two days at Mt Smart Stadium, bringing together some of the region’s top young athletes. It was fantastic to see Rutherford students competing in a wide range of events.
Congratulations to all who took part: Colleen Atinae, Tara Baker-Singh, Louis Bishop, Alfie Colegate, Mila Curran, Ben Curtis, Rosa Curtis, Jerry Faiese, Longdon Fan, Ollie Gilbert, Ashlee Hari, Nivaeya Kairau, Dylan Marais, Lex Murray, Sam Richards, Amy Thomson, Kate Wilcox, and Lola Yates.
Following the championships, Amy Thomson, Ollie Gilbert, and Lex Murray were selected to represent the Auckland team at the North Island Secondary Schools Championships.
All three athletes performed exceptionally well at the North Island event. Amy Thomson placed 2nd in the Senior Girls 2000m Steeplechase, Ollie Gilbert finished 2nd in the Junior Boys High Jump, and Lex Murray placed 6th in the Junior Boys 800m.
Amy Thomson has since been selected for the New Zealand team to compete at the Oceania Championships in Darwin. She has also been named in the pre-competition training squad, travelling to the Gold Coast from 11–21 May to prepare for the 2000m steeplechase. We wish Amy all the very best for this exciting opportunity. Rutherford is incredibly fortunate to have such talented athletes representing the school.
