Emerging Leaders' Breakfast

Rutherford Students Recognised at Emerging Leaders’ Breakfast

Rutherford students recognised at Emerging Leaders’ Breakfast

Two weeks ago, two Rutherford College students, Roqeia Ghaznawi and Abbey Nguyen, were nominated to attend the Ministry of Education Emerging Leaders’ Breakfast at the Waipuna Conference Centre in Panmure. The event celebrated students from migrant and former refugee backgrounds who demonstrated leadership and made a positive contribution to their schools and communities in 2026.

The students were treated to a delicious breakfast and inspiring speakers. Fatuma Bah, spoke to students about her own personal life and career journey and reminded students to be intentional with who they include in their village, be proud of who they are, collaborate with others and never leave their culture at the door. Jason Swann, Director of Education for the Central and East Auckland region, spoke about the important qualities of humility and gratitude and how they are important in leadership. The Emerging Leaders’ Breakfast gave Roqeia and Abbey the opportunity to connect with other young leaders from schools across Auckland who are making a difference in their schools and communities.

Roqeia and Abbey (both year 13) were nominated in recognition of their leadership in cultural groups, initiative and dedication to their schoolwork. They both used to take ESOL classes in previous years. Now they are in year 13 and both students are excelling academically, as well as demonstrating a continued commitment to serve others.. Roqeia is a leader within the Persian language club and an International Student Ambassador. Abbey has demonstrated her leadership through coaching the K-Pop dance group, leading the Cultural Committee and Polyfest’s dance challenge teams, whilst also being on the Ball Committee and serving as a Peer mentor.

We are very proud of Roqeia and Abbey and delighted that they had the opportunity to be recognised for their leadership and represent Rutherford College at this special event.
