In Week 1 Rutherford College Celebrated Fijian Language Week
In Week 1, Rutherford College celebrated Fijian Language Week, bringing staff and students together to experience and appreciate the rich culture, traditions and customs of Fiji. A highlight of the week was a traditional Fijian yaqona ceremony, where staff had the opportunity to experience an important part of Fijian culture. The ceremony was followed by meke, Fiji’s traditional dance, adding colour, energy and cultural pride to the occasion.
The celebrations continued throughout the week with a range of exciting activities. Students competed in their houses to scrape coconuts and extract coconut milk, testing their skills while working together as a team. Another highlight was Tin Tin Pani, a traditional Fijian game that brought plenty of excitement as the houses competed against one another and challenged the teachers.
The week was a fantastic opportunity for our Rutherford College community to come together, learn something new and celebrate the diversity that makes our school special. Staff and students thoroughly enjoyed the activities and gained a glimpse into the traditions and cultural practices that are an important part of Fijian life.
